Life time spoke output on half DVD Disk !
This isn’t as crazy an idea as it might seem. Everything you utter in a year
amounts to about four gigabytes of digitized speech. That’s half a DVD disc, or
four postage-stamp-sized memory chips. In another 50 years, say, a lifetime of
spoken output will fit in one of those sugar-cube-sized terabyte stores that
surely are coming. This dramatically changes the way we think about the record
of our lives, as individuals and societies. The roughly 18 million books in the
Library of Congress add up to about 18 terabytes – less than $40,000 worth of
disks at today’s prices. This means that the Web – which is now the defacto
sieve for capturing social output – may be though evanescent, containable.
Environmental Hazards of Computer Boom !
(Asian News International)
Researcher found that manufacturing one desk top computer and 17 inch CRT
monitor uses at least 240 kg of fossil fuels, 2kg of chemicals,
and 150 kg of water – a total of 1.8 tones of materials- roughly the weight of a
rhinoceros or sports utility vehicle.
Further the rapid rate of at which the PCs are discarded for newer machines, add
up to growing mountains of garbage and increasingly
serious contribution to resource depletion environmental pollution and climate
change.
